HISTORICAL NOTE: The Brazilian ironclad Silvado was originally ordered by Paraguay in 1864 under the name Nemesis, but was sold to Brazil when payment proved impossible. She participated in the War of the Triple Alliance between Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay against Paraguay from 1867-70. Silvado, named after Captain Americo Brasilio Silvado, who met a tragic end when his ship, the ironclad Rio de Janeiro, struck a mine and sank. The ship was launched in 1865 and completed on September 15, 1866. In 1867 the Silvado participated in actions at Fort Curupaiti and Lagoon Pires. In 1868 she returned to bomb Curupaiti and joined operations during the passage of Humait, forming part of the same division that fought in curupaiti. On March 2, he came to the aid of Cabral and Lima Barros when they were being approached by Paraguayan forces in a canoe. On October 1, she forced the passage of Angostura alongside ironclads Bahia, Barroso, and Tamandare.
