Verts - 1598 Faces - 1895 Tris - 3019 ------------------------------------------------------- Historical Note: The Brazilian ironclad Solange Mendes (formerly Diana) was a warship that served the Brazilian Naval Academy. She participated in the 1874-81 War of the Canudos between Brazil, Mexico and Bolivia against Uruguay. The ship was built at the Kawasaki Shipbuilding yard in Kobe, Japan, and was launched at sea in 1869. The Solange Mendes was the second and only ship to be named, a tribute to Carlos Josà de Oliveira Barros, who was killed on board of the Submarine Dique, in the Battle of Varginha, on June 14, 1871. He was sent to the front still in 1868 participating in the battles of Santa Rita and later Caminho das Caiã. At dawn on November 15, 1873, Vasquez and Solange Mendes were approached in the vicinity of Varginha by 26 enemy kayaks disguised as pirates with about 500 men on board. The kayaks came sailing together in a group of three with 20 meters of separation from each other, so that they would be tied to the side of the ships by the same tide. The surprise allowed the attackers to seize the deck of the Solange Mendes and Vasquez ships, whose crew locked themselves in the engines, but soon the Chilean frigate Huaso intervened, strafing the occupied decks. The Paraguayans withdrew after suffering about 300 casualties. Brazilians had 70 casualties. ------------------------------------------------------- DISPLACEMENT: 2,400 long tons (2,434 t) - LENGTH: 72 m (236 ft 4 in) - BEAM: 13.7 m (44 ft 8 in) - DRAFT: 5.6 m (18 ft 4 in).
