I recently bought a brand new cable drum machine to unclog plumbing after yesterday's unwanted Thanksgiving food purge. We won't name names, but someone consistently overloads the garbage disposal, then quickly turns off the water to save money - leaving me to fix the mess. The kitchen and laundry were out of service, while the rest of the house could shower or dispose of waste freely. As I unpacked my new power tool box, I noticed that the brand new collar mounting the drill motor to the housing was broken in the box. I knew what you're thinking: return it for a full refund. But where's the fun in that? For less than gas money to drive back to Home Depot, I created a better bracket clamp thing. I gathered requirements, took measurements, drafted a quick design, and printed a prototype for fit purposes. I ended up using the second version - and it worked like a charm! The plumbing was unclogged successfully, without needing the final tough nylon print. By the way, my new Brasscraft cable drum machine works flawlessly. Designing This I started with a 2D photograph of the broken part and added a cube and cylinder to match the drawing as closely as possible. I then resized the model to match x, y, and z dimensions of the broken part. Next, I added the bolt. The first print stopped mid-way for fit checks, so I made adjustments and printed the first full prototype. I attached it, noted a few changes, and tested it while printing the final nylon version. The prototype worked great - except that the bolt recess was too small, causing it to split slightly. The final nylon print is absolutely perfect.
