Brass Block
sketchfab
A block is a cast in brass, specifically designed to impress intricate patterns and designs on book covers. Blocks are used in numerous collections, such as the Cottons or Harleys, where each design serves as a symbol of hereditary lines just like individual coats of arms. Some blocks are purely decorative, adding an extra layer of elegance to book covers. To create these impressions, a blocking machine is utilized. The block is carefully positioned and fastened into a heated platen on the machine. Once the correct temperature is reached, the operator applies gold leaf or powdered gold onto the surface to be blocked. This is then aligned under the platen, where the block makes an impression at the pull of a lever. The key to successful blocking lies in achieving the perfect temperature and impression pressure. In some cases, the block may be impressed without any gold being applied - a process known as 'blind' blocking.
