Marine animals belonging to the brachiopod phylum are characterized by their unique body structure and lifestyle. These fascinating creatures have a pair of valves - one on top and one at the bottom - that are connected in the posterior region, unlike bivalves which have bilateral valves. Brachiopods typically live attached to hard substrates via a peduncle or buried in soft sediments where they excavate extensive networks using their valves.
