Langhans, who had studied the works of Roman architectural theorist Vitruvius, based his design on the Propylaea in Athens which had served as an inspiration for Roman architects during Classical Antiquity. The structure, built of sandstone and standing sixty-six feet in height, consists of twelve Doric columns which form five separate passageways on which the upper portion of the structure rests. Only Prussian Kings and German Emperors were permitted to pass through the central entranceway, the widest of the five openings, while the lower orders of society were allowed to use the other four passageways. Two additional buildings, replacing the original structures which were destroyed in World War II, stand on either side of the central structure and were built in the 1990s. A bronze quadriga, that is a chariot drawn by four horses and complete with riders, stands on top of the main gate and represents the Goddess of Victory.
