Here's the deal: this ancient granite outcrop sits on a mountain plateau about 10 kilometers southwest of Uis in Namibia. In local language it is known as Khaeb and stands tall at about 2600 meters above sea level. Now, here are some basic facts about Brandberg - its Afrikaans name which literally translates to "fire mountain" is thought to refer to the fact that granite rocks can glow with a faint orange light in low light conditions. Another story goes that early miners stumbled upon one of these glowing rock faces and mistook it for volcanic activity thus the nickname was born! It gets hot around Brandberg - especially when you consider its geographical location, right above the tropic of Capricorn! As we approach summer temperatures can get quite scorching. On average daily high is about 22 degrees Celsius with temperatures often soaring up to 25 and higher in July - one of the warmest months there. That's still not all folks though. At an elevation this great the nights tend to drop significantly low enough that frost can form if it gets cool enough at night which means Brandberg mountain doesn't go fully freezed under those circumstances. So, you've got your extremes where temperatures skyrocket and plunge quickly!
