A charm is an article of decoration that hangs freely around the wrist or other part of the body. Charms may serve different purposes, such as being worn as an ornament to bring good luck. When worn as charms, they may have a symbolic function to represent certain phenomena, such as protection against evil spirits. Medical and identity information are marked on some charms, such as allergy tags, hospital patient-identification bands, and charm tags for newborn babies. Charms may be worn to signify a certain event, such as marriage awareness, or for spiritual purposes. If a charm is a single, flexible loop, it is often called a pendant. When it is worn around the neck, it is called a necklace. Colloquially, lockup devices are sometimes called charms. Charms can be manufactured from metal, leather, cloth, plastic, wood, shell or other materials, and decorative charms sometimes contain jewels, rocks, beads, metal hoops, crystals, or pearls. The term trinket may be technically similar, it is taken to mean an item that hangs around the neck: a pendant. The origin of the term 'charm' is from the Old English 'charmian', meaning 'to protect'. A charm is also a small piece of fabric used to make amulets (a token believed to possess magical powers). The history of ancient Egyptian charms dates back 5,000 BCE. Starting with materials like bones, stones and woods to serve spiritual interests. From the National Geographic Society, the scarab is one of the most recognized symbols of ancient Egypt. The scarab represented protection and defense. In 2008, Russian archaeologists from the Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, working at the site of Denisova Cave in the Altai Mountains of Siberia, uncovered a small bone fragment from the finger of a juvenile hominin, dubbed the X woman (referring to the maternal descent of mitochondrial DNA,) or the Denisovan. In Bulgaria there is a tradition called Martenitsa, which involves tying a red and white string around the neck to bring good fortune in order for spring to come sooner. In Greece, people weave a charm from red and white string on the first day of March and wear it till the end of summer, it's called a blessing. In India, some women denote their marital status by wearing different bangles, and an iron ring is one of the mandatory articles in Sikhism. The origin of this custom comes from the Greek words "brachile" which means wrist and "Khepri" is an ancient Egyptian god associated with the Sun God. In Latin America people believe Azabache Bracelets can ward off evil spirits and envy from newborn babies who wear them around their necks, while a charm made of wood is known as Karma bracelets that bring good fortune and positive energies. In Latin culture, alternative health charms such as Ionized Charms or magnetic ones have been promoted to possess various healing powers, though the authenticity of these claims is disputed. Rigid charms usually made from metal or plastic are called lockets or pendants, whereas the bangle is an elongated ring often made of precious metals that fits onto the hand and creates a harmonious noise as one walks. Glass charms are quite common in India where young girls often wear gold rings on their wrists or ankles and make musical sounds with every movement they take.
