Boxing Champion at The British Museum, London

With battered ears and a brow that's swollen from impact, this head might have originated from a full-length statue of a triumphant heavyweight boxer at the height of their career. However, other interpretations are also possible. A young Hercules could be depicted here, shown after completing an especially grueling labor or emerging victorious from a battle with one of his many adversaries. Alternatively, the diadem or band in the hair and the sideburns might be characteristic features of portraits from the Hellenistic period (323-31 BC), suggesting that this could be a king who embodies the characteristics of Hercules as an athlete.
