Well it's been an eternity since I last posted a model here. Over the past few years, I've been working in industry on various projects, so unfortunately, I'm unable to share many of those items due to client confidentiality and IP restrictions. Anyway, I thought I'd kick off the new year by posting a model. I've had the privilege of collaborating with Box Racing Components on several projects since 2016. Founded by BMX legend Toby Henderson, Box Racing Components first emerged in the BMX world but has recently been expanding its presence into the mountain biking space. They manufacture an array of impressive mountain bike components and have established a reputation as a viable, high-quality option among some of the other major players in the bike component industry. This particular project called for a twin shifter design to complement their push-pull line of shifters. For initial direction, some rough sketches were provided by the engineering team and we collaborated on material selection and case design. Due to the nature of the part (i.e., clamshell, seams had to match), I employed a top-down approach (linking sketches through assembly), which made it significantly easier for the engineering team to make on-the-fly adjustments to the model during the 3D printing and prototype phase in California. Another challenging aspect of this project was its inclusion of injection-molded and cast parts, requiring all shapes and surfaces to be drafted. This is always more difficult since you can't easily create planes off work surfaces; there are no straight angles. One of the main reasons I'm so proud of this project is that it's the first one I've worked on that was mass-manufactured and sold in stores worldwide. As an industrial designer, our ultimate goal is to get a product out into circulation. Seeing a design you were involved with on store shelves or on a bike is an incredible feeling. So, I'd like to express my gratitude to Box and the team for making this dream a reality. Here's a review of the Box One and the new Box Two twin shifter group set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VThnLp6yyFs Please keep in mind that this is all I can share of this project, so please don't bother asking about the internals or original files. Thanks for understanding.
