Box and lid

Box and lid

thingiverse

Cool little box I designed, created using SketchUp. It takes about 3 hours and 30 minutes to print and is roughly the same size as an iPhone 5 screen. Makes a great starter project for those just getting into 3D printing and can hold smaller prints. Print Settings Printer Brand: Robo 3D Printer: R1 ABS + PLA Model Supports: Doesn't Matter Resolution: Medium works well (.2mm thickness, .25 fill ratio) Notes: Medium quality is best for this as it's slightly thicker but still a good quality layout. Make sure to use plenty of adhesive to help it stick to the print bed because large surface area prints such as this will warp. Post-Printing The lid and the nub that goes in it to hold the lid don't fit together quite perfectly from my settings, but nothing a little sanding can fix. After that I used super glue (if you don't have any buy some; it'll be your best friend in 3D printing while assembling parts) to attach the nub and the lid, now you have your new friendly little box. How I Designed This SketchUp design. After many failed attempts at designing boxes and storage in SketchUp, I finally figured out a few tricks to getting good designs. First make your base; draw your shape (make it a round number like 70 or 125). Raise to desired thickness (1-4mm). Then create the walls of your thing by taking another shape off to the side 1.5-3mm smaller than your first one (that's why a nice easy number for the first one works). Use the measuring tape to find the center of each shape and center them on top of each other; if this doesn't work, just eyeball it and then check with the tape. Zoom in towards the object and use the rising tool to rise your box or storage object to desired height. Afterwards you can group it as a single object to scale it larger or smaller if it's not the size you wanted.
