This substantial, impressive vessel was sparked by an unforgettable moment in Charles Dickens' novel Oliver Twist, (1837). In this pivotal scene, the famished orphan Oliver, lifts his bowl to the workhouse master with his famous entreaty, "Please sir, I want some more". Dr Iskandar often gives his creations titles or descriptions that draw on literary prose or poetry. This 'begging vessel' honours Oliver's moment of bravery and audacity as well as his notorious humiliation after being severely beaten for his request. This fundamental bowl exudes an air of dignity, poise and composure - it commands attention. Crafted from raku clay, the vessel's exterior has a coarse texture while its interior is glazed to a silky smoothness. The robust quality of the bowl is amplified by thick walls and a sturdy foot-ring that stands out with its flat black glaze. Bands of subtle colour encircle its upper body, tempering the austerity of the vessel.
