I've been actively working on creating a clean way to assemble an spool and extruder together. I modified the standard printrbot extruder and the bowden adapter many users have by making a quick wood version. I threaded the hole that feeds filament to the extruder, allowing me to insert a bowden tube attachment. Having a small length of hose on the rear side of the extruder effectively counters any kink in the line as it pulls in filament. Below are the primary problems I tackled when developing my setup. Letting the filament follow its natural curve is essential. Keeping the Bowden tube as short as possible is also important. Providing the filament into the extruder with the least amount of kink will help improve results. Reducing resistance to the spool in both directions is a must-have. My design includes a universal mount on top that can support fans for the extruder, allowing anyone to make simple adapters for any extruder model. The side pieces without logos fit better and use less filament when printed. I'm working on modeling a way to connect these modules together so users could build an array of spool holders for multiple extruder setups.
