In traditional engine blocks, the crankshaft lower bearings are designed as individual bearing carriers. To better withstand piston forces, these main bearing carriers are made of gray cast iron. The bearing carriers are cast and machined together with the lower housing from the initial assembly. In the case of an engine block with crankcase, the lower crankcase is divided at the level of the crankshaft into two parts: the upper part to the crankshaft and the lower part to the crankshaft. This last part is called casing-sole or “bedplate”.In the lower part of the crankcase, the crankshaft bearings are an integral part of this stable and separate structure. The crankcase is machined together with the cylinder block and assembled into the upper part of the crankcase after the crankshaft has been fitted.
