The Boston Red Sox are an American professional baseball team based in Boston, Massachusetts. As a member club of the American League East division, they compete in Major League Baseball (MLB). The Red Sox have won eight World Series championships and have played in 12 championship series. Founded in 1901 as one of the eight charter franchises of the American League, Fenway Park has been their home ballpark since 1912. The team's name "Red Sox" was chosen by John I. Taylor around 1908, following a tradition set by previous teams known as the Boston Red Stockings, including the forerunner of the Atlanta Braves. Boston dominated the new league from its inception, winning four championships before 1918 and the first World Series in 1903 against the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, they then endured an 86-year championship drought dubbed "The Curse of the Bambino," allegedly beginning with their sale of Babe Ruth to the rival New York Yankees two years after their world championship in 1918. The team's history during this period was marked by several memorable moments in World Series history, including Enos Slaughter's "mad dash" in 1946, the "Impossible Dream" in 1967, Carlton Fisk's home run in 1975, and Bill Buckner's error in 1986. Their victory in the 2013 World Series made them the first team to win three championships in the 21st century. They also won championships in 2004 and 2007. The Red Sox have an intense rivalry with the Yankees, considered one of the fiercest and most historic rivalries in North American professional sports. The Boston Red Sox are owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Liverpool F.C. in the Premier League. They consistently rank among the top MLB teams in average road attendance, while their small capacity prevents them from leading overall attendance. From May 15, 2003 to April 10, 2013, the Red Sox sold out every home game—a total of 820 games (794 regular season) for a major professional sports record.
