Borthwick Castle

Borthwick Castle stands proudly in Midlothian, just a short distance south of Gorebridge. Commissioned by King James in 1430, the castle was built with his explicit permission. This medieval stronghold remains one of Scotland's most remarkably preserved fortifications to this day. Reaching an impressive height of 110ft (34m), its walls boast a thickness of 14ft (4.3m). Notably, Mary Queen of Scots made brief visits twice here, and Oliver Cromwell's forces laid siege to the castle in 1650. Although it fell quickly after only a few shots were fired, the damage still visible today is a testament to that pivotal event. After a period of abandonment, Borthwick Castle was meticulously restored and now serves as an idyllic wedding venue.
