Borne « Menhir du Goulay », Noisy-sur-École
sketchfab
This stone monument discovered in 1976 near the town of Oncy-sur-Ecole measures 0.84m high and 0.36m wide. Initially inventoried as a menhir, it was quickly thought to be a boundary marker. The engraving in the shape of a scale is topped with an episcopal cross marking affiliation to an ecclesiastical jurisdiction. This scale may represent a graphical contraction of the coat of arms for the Benedictine Abbey of Chelles, an ancient Merovingian oratory dedicated to Saint George and founded by Clothilde, wife of Clovis. The engraving in the shape of a circle on its other side appears to be different in style and was probably engraved after the abbey's destruction during communal boundary surveys that followed the French Revolution. It is likely the initial for the town of Oncy. This royal marker has been relocated and now resides within the grounds of Noisy-sur-Ecole's community school.
