Book of Kells Birds Planter
thingiverse
This is a relief based on art from the Book of Kells, the famous illuminated bible from historic Ireland. These birds are one small section of one page. It's an amazing and beautiful piece of history that you can view here: https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/hm50tr726?locale=en I created this relief by making a reverse lithophane. I drew the birds and filled in areas I wanted higher with dark shades and areas I wanted lower with lighter shades. Then used the round lithophane maker at https://www.lithophanemaker.com/ Blurring your image will give you soft, rounded edges. Then I took the lithophane file and merged it with the cup/pot I made in Fusion 360 For use as a planter, I plan to add an insert for water drainage, but you could also make a hole in the bottom. I'm still relatively new to 3d modeling and printing, so I'm happy to hear suggestions on how to improve the design. Hope you enjoy this reimagined piece of history!
