Book

cults3d

This may be the first 3D printed book in the world (that's text-based and FDM-printable). The pages, eight in all, consist of a single 0.2 mm layer. PLA, at this thickness, makes a surprisingly robust material that can be bent with impunity. The text is a sci-fi tale set in the late 2200s. It's inspired by Beowulf, Shakespeare, and online subcultures. The epic poem vibe is less an aesthetic choice than a result of the limited precision of my entry-level 3D printer, which can't print letters < 7 mm or objects > 230 mm. The typeface chosen, Butler, is one of the few serifed stencil typefaces available. (Stencil is a requirement IMO, because the islands inside many letters, e.g. A, will fall out when printed on a single layer). While there are many sans-serif stencil fonts available, I find that they tend to be ugly, all caps, and illegible.
