Bone Die

Humans often roll the dice to gamble or play social games that date back to ancient Greek and Roman societies where they were widely used. This small hand-carved die made from bone was discovered on Boston Common near the former site of the Great Elm during an archaeological excavation in the 1980s. Note the irregular patterning when rotating a 3D model, as this die was handmade by each side having slight nuances from the craftsman's touch. It was unearthed near the former site of the Great Elm, which was possibly one of the most popular spots on the Common in the 19th century. The Great Elm was revered as a natural symbol of strength and unity in Boston until it was ravaged by a storm in 1876.
