A skull and crossbones or death's head is a symbol made of a human skull and two long bones crossed together under the skull. This design began in the Late Middle Ages as a symbol of death and was often used on tombstones to remind people of their own mortality. In modern times, this symbol is used to warn of danger, usually when dealing with poisonous substances like deadly chemicals. The Unicode system uses U+2620 for the symbol ☠ SKULL AND CROSSBONES. This ancient symbol has been around for a long time and became popular during the medieval Danse Macabre symbolism. From at least the 12th century, it was used on military flags or insignia to warn of the ferocity of the unit displaying it. It also came to be associated with piracy from the 14th century onwards. By the 15th century, this symbol had developed into its familiar form and was often used to mark the entrances of graveyards, particularly Spanish cemeteries. It was also used as a warning on poison containers since the 19th century. The skull and crossbones were popular on crucifixes made in Northern Europe during the 18th and 19th century and were worn on rosaries or displayed on walls in religious orders to symbolize Christ's victory over death. These crucifixes were often placed on coffins during funerals and later given to the deceased's family.
