In May 2004, Bombardier launched the TRAXX locomotive platform as demonstrator loco 185 561 with an improved version. The machine had significant similarities to F140AC trains, incorporating slight improvements including crumple zones in cabins for enhanced crash protection. Furthermore, previously synthetic ester cooled inverters utilizing GTO technology were substituted with water-cooled inverters powered by IGBTs which promise efficiency improvements. The locomotives conform to the French loading gauge making them suitable for service between France and Germany. Bombardier planned to produce 200 of these new trains among a larger order of DB Cargo, hence assigning them the subclass designation DBAG Class 185.2. Subsequently, any additional private orders for AC locomotives merged with the F140AC2 production line causing original F140AC type to halt production. First in this production line was TRAXX F140AC2 locomotive 185 561 produced for homologation approval. Additionally, a similar machine called 185 568 conducted tests on the HSL-Zuid high-speed rail track and also tested the ETCS system in 2006. Later on these test machines were used by private operators as regular locomotives.
