Announced on 19th February 2007 as a stretched CRJ900 variant (previously CRJ900X), the first production flight occurred on 28th July 2009 in Montreal, with an initial service planned for Q1 2010. As of March 2014, 70 aircraft were delivered to airlines, while 36 remained unfilled.
