Bolt-on Lightweight Ducted fan-MakerGear M2 (& silent build recs)
thingiverse
This fan shroud for Makergear M2 boosts cooling at the point of extrusion, resulting in higher quality prints and steeper overhangs without support. Alternatively, it enhances a quieter and lower output fan's performance to near-or-better than the stock cooling fan. Can be bolted on stock printer with a few fasteners (see below). Edit 02-01-2023: Woops, this might only work for people with 40x40x20mm extruder fans. A version for stock 40x40x10mm extruder fans will be published later. Edit 02-06-2023: Untested mount and shroud for 40x40x10 extruder fans added. If you do test before I do, I would appreciate a comment as to how it worked out. Overhang Test Results: 45 degrees -> 70 degree (stock vs low speed quiet fan + shroud) Features: Boost cooling performance by directing air where it counts Fan output is centered, not offset. 50mm Fan does not run into frame when homing x axis Compatible with aftermarket "thicker" extruder fans, such as the 40mm x 20mm. Clears stock binder clips Lightweight design What you see here is the 7th iteration of the design. Print Settings: Rafts: Doesn't Matter Supports: Yes Resolution: 0.2 Infill: 60% Notes: 2 shells also. Print as shown in part preview (but feel free to rotate around z) Mount.stl needs support. If you are running the stock extruder-cooling (not part-cooling) fan, which is 40x40x10mm, use the mount10mm.stl and the shroud10mm.stl versions. Remember to print oriented as shown in part preview. Hardware Required Fasteners: Choose either metric 3mm or English #6-32 fasteners: Shown in format: (quantity) Diameter x Length Dimensions are for Flat Head Machine screws, though other head types should work (are a shade longer). Screw length does not include additional thickness for the stock makerbot logo plates on the fans. I recommend the #6-32 fasteners for snug fit (2) #6-32 x 1.25" (for 40mm x 20mm extruder fan. use 1" or 1.125" if using stock 20mmx10mm fan) (2) #6-32 x 1.00" (2) #6-32 x 0.75" (6) #6-32 Nuts 3mm fasteners: (quantity x diameter x length) (2) 3mm x 30mm (for 40x40x20mm extruder fan. you may use 3mm x 20mm screws for stock 40x40x10mm extruder fan) (2) 3mm x 25mm (2) 3mm x 20mm (6) 3mm nuts These are used from long to short, in order with the holes from top (extruder) to bottom (of fan mount) when assembled. Note that that the only thing holding the 40mm extruder fan is the bottom left screw. Top left Other screw mounts available, if you have fasteners that are long enough. Silent Fan Build Suggestions I recommend (and have tested) the following fans for a minimal noise build: Electronics enclosure fan: Scythe Sickle Flow SLP-F120-01 120mm Case Fan (check newegg.com if this link is down) Part Cooling fan: GELID Solutions Silent5 FN-SX05-40 50mm Case Fan (check newegg.com if this link is down) Molex Connectors: all fans will need the following molex connectors to connect to stock power lines by MakerGear: (for each fan): 2x WM2781CT-ND, 1x WM2761-ND. In fact, I'd get more than one extra of the crimp terminals if you haven't done it before. Stepper motor dampeners Nema 17 Dampeners. Available many places.
