Boiler Empty Sign for Steam Engine
thingiverse
I have 3D printed a two-color sign for steam engines titled 'Boiler Empty'. The image I'm showing was created at 0.8 scale. If you have a single-head printer and haven't yet attempted dual color printing, here's my approach: Start by printing in white until the layer containing lettering. Click on "Pause Print" then use the 'z' axis button to elevate the print head by 10mm. The printer will complete the remaining instructions before stopping to allow for filament retraction. Insert a piece of paper between the print and the print head, using program buttons to pull back the pinch wheel and remove white filament. Replace it with red filament and click the "extrude filament" button again until a steady flow of color is produced. This operation should be caught on the inserted sheet of paper. Using tweezers, clear any residual filament in the nozzle. Then, carefully remove the paper to prevent any slight print residue at the point where printing ceased. Verify that your print head remains spotless and you're good to proceed. 'Resume Print' to complete the task successfully. Your chosen printer software will naturally influence the specifics of these steps. My preferred software is Repetier coupled with Cura slicer. Additional resources are now available with improved, deeper lettering, specifically designed to address previous issues arising from over-scaling the original design, resulting in limited layers visible.
