The full-size engine will be built by modifying an engine from a Smart For Two car. By using the bottom half, including the crankcase, crankshaft and connecting rods the 'hard part' is already done and all that's needed is a new cylinder block, smaller pistons and a custom valve chest. Right now I'm saving up to buy an engine; they cost around $1,500 surplus. Once that is blueprinted I will upload a new cylinder block and continue upwards. Stay tuned!

2020_08_05:

--Complete redesign of engine in progress! Here's the list of changes:

-Individual cylinders will be concentrated in a block to improve heat retention and to shorten crankshaft. Cylinder bore is now 2.6 inches, or 66mm

-Crankcase has been shortened by around 2 in. or 50mm and widened by 10mm.

-Crankshaft has been completely redesigned. Throw has been increased from 1 in. to 1-1/8 in. (28mm) or 2-1/4 in. (56mm) stroke.

-Crankshaft has been shortened about 2 in. or 50mm

-I'm going to scrap the reversing gear and use the controllable pitch propeller instead

-I'm going to add provision for a starter motor for the steam version. This can double as a propulsion system for display models.

In the next few years I'll be uploading components that can be used for LostPLA Casting a 3 cylinder single acting unaflow poppet valve steam engine. At full scale the engine has a 66mm bore and 57mm stroke. The engine measures 400mm long including flywheel and shaft coupling. The crankcase takes about 3 days to print and uses nearly 2kg of filament. The engine has a swept volume slightly more than a Stuart Swan twin double acting steam engine.

Remember to check back from time to time to see if the version numbers of various parts have changed: itis evolving!

This engine will be presented in two forms:

one for a plastic display model that may be run with an electric motor

one with material added to produce Lost PLA casting pieces that can be machined to final tolerance after they are cast. All of these files have a "C_" prefix.

--I've finished prototyping in 1/3 scale but the 1/2 scale work continues. The first Lost PLA version will be printed in 1/2 scale and aluminum castings will be machined in my shop.

-Crankcase top and bottom can be printed with support touching build.

-The cylinder block can be printed without a raft but in the orientation shown and with support 'touching buildplate'.

-Print the crankshaft and cam shaft in the same way.

-Flywheel can be printed with support from table only. Holes can be tapped M4. The keyway is probably too small.

2020_10_16:

-Deleted a dozen obsolete files

-Uploaded Short_Cylinder_Block_02

-Uploaded Short_Crankcase__01

-Uploaded Crankshaft_20

More to come; stay tuned but I could really use a Fusion 360 guru!

Print Settings

Printer Brand:

Creality

Printer:

Ender 3

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

Medium

Infill:

20%

Filament: Hatchbox PLA Any color

Notes:

Use supports: "touching build platform" to reinforce flanges; none else needed.
This will fit on an [Ender 3](https://www.amazon.com/Official-Creality-3D-Removable-220x220x250MM/dp/B07K3SZBHJ?dchild=1&keywords=ender+3&qid=1612857257&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&linkCode=ll1&tag=thingiverse09-20&linkId=5419ace64a5f58b068a896710257ed13&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl) if printed to half scale.
Half scale engines can run scooters and motorcycles.

One third scale makes an engine suitable for a large model boat.

How I Designed This

Designed using 123D Design

Custom Section

I use an Ender 3 to print everything in 1/2 scale but it doesn't seem to be an option I can display! Full scale pieces that won't fit the Ender 3 are being done by a pal with a used industrial Delta machine.

Category: Other
