Boer War uniform

Prior to 1885, most of the British Army had donned crimson jackets, with khaki service attire not being introduced for the majority of regiments until 1902 (though some had adopted it earlier). The new uniform was a response to a pressing need to produce uniforms that were suitable to the environments in which they fought, this temperate climate uniform, featuring a sandy hue, was ideally suited to the desert landscapes of South Africa, as was the lighter fabric from which it was crafted (a departure from the heavy felted crimson jackets). This is the very uniform worn by Serjeant Charles Glasson George of Mylor who served with the DCLI during the Boer War in South Africa from 1899-1902. The crimson sash would have been a part of non-service forms of his uniform, as worn by Serjeant George.
