Human: Made circa 400 BC. Terracotta figurine, 1907.10-23.1. In ancient times, the city-state of Boeotia stood proudly northeast of Athens. Thebes was its chief city and agricultural hub, rich in fertile lands. However, Boeotia had a long-standing feud with maritime Athens and sided with Sparta during the Peloponnesian War. Despite this hostility, the Boeotians developed their own distinct artistic styles, particularly excelling in crafting terracotta statuettes. These figurines were primarily created for worship at shrines, where they would be dedicated to the gods. Once the allocated space was filled, the statues were carefully gathered and buried in designated pits. This young individual holds a puppy snugly in his left hand, while another canine companion stands faithfully by his side. A wreath adorned with a central rosette crowns his head, signifying honor and achievement.
