Human: The Boeing Headquarters stands poised between the classic ideals of the past and the towering skyscrapers of the future. Beneath its modern façade, a forest of unnecessary spandrels conceals itself. But the true story lies in how this tower was built. It was constructed hovering above very active rail lines that connect Amtrak's Union Station with the outside world. Developers secured so-called "air rights" for $1,300,000 annually over 99 years to create their building. In essence, they are renting the air space above the rail lines. To achieve this feat, a significant portion of the skyscraper was built on a platform that hangs in mid-air, suspended above the tracks by a truss visible on the roof. The situation became even more complex when the building and land were owned by different parties at construction time. The building owners leased the ground for their 36-story tower from another company for about a hundred years. Remarkably, the building was erected without disrupting rail service despite some train tracks needing to be relocated.
