McDonnell Douglas and Boeing jointly developed the stealthy Bird of Prey, an aircraft built on top-secret government funding. Initially envisioned as a technological marvel that could defy radar detection, it proved to be a modest $67 million expenditure for the pioneering effort of demonstrating revolutionary stealth capabilities. Developed at a cost significantly lower than comparable high-tech projects of similar scale, the Bird of Prey laid the groundwork for the materials and technology incorporated in Boeing's groundbreaking X-45 unmanned aerial combat drone. As an internal venture not publicly assigned to one of its own developmental designation sequences, the stealth bird has thus far remained locked within secure circles with no indication that production will be authorized.
