The original Boeing 747-100, the first jumbo jet, debuted in 1969 with a capacity for nearly 500 passengers. It served from 1970 till its record was broken by the A380 and remained the world's largest passenger jet for 37 years. As the first of Boeing's 747 family, it carried up to 550 passengers in a single class configuration and was over two times larger than the Boeing 707-320. The 747-100 had a capacity of 452 passengers with a standard two-class arrangement and 366 in a three-class layout. Released around the same time as the DC-10 and L-1011 Tristar, the 747 stood out due to its size and dominated for 37 years in the heavy airliner class. The series continued with the -200, -300, -400, and latest -800 or -8I version. The 747 boasts a cruising range of over 5000 miles and a speed above 550 mph at 35,000 feet. Newer versions offer improvements in cruise, payload, and range.
