Available in multiple formats, it's based on the Boeing 717-200, a variant of McDonnell Douglas MD-95 jet commercial airliners produced after Boeing acquired McDonnell Douglas. Designed for smaller capacities (106 to 134 passengers), the standard version had a range of 1430 nautical miles, while the high gross weight variant boasted an extended range of 2060 nmi with two auxiliary tanks. The 717 replaced the KC-135 tankers' model number (717-100) and was in production from 1999 to 2006, but faced stiff competition from Embraer and Bombardier Regional Jets which led to order cancellations and eventual closure of production. The Boeing 717 was powered by a pair of 20,000 lbf or 21,000 lbf thrust JT8D-217C/219 engines and is the last narrow single-aisle jetliner produced by Boeing.
