The Boeing 717-200 was a Boeing adaptation of McDonnell Douglas' MD-95 jet commercial airliners following the acquisition by Boeing. Designed with a smaller passenger capacity (106 to 134 passengers) and a standard range of 1430 nautical miles, an ER or high gross weight version boasted auxiliary tanks for an extended range of 2060 nautical miles. The model number was reused from the old KC-135 tankers, numbered Boeing 717-100. Produced from 1999 to 2006, these aircraft faced reduced sales due to competition from Embraer and Bombardier Regional Jets, leading to order cancellations and eventual production closure. Powered by a pair of 20,000 lbf or 21,000 lbf thrust JT8D-217C/JT8D-219 engines, the Boeing 717 was the last narrow single-aisle jetliner produced by Boeing.
