It was also the first four-engine Boeing airliner, derived from the B-17C heavy bomber. The aircraft shared identical wings, tail, stabilizers, engines, and landing gear with its predecessor, while the fuselage featured a low-drag, aerodynamic circular shape for efficient pressurization. With a spacious cabin over 12 feet wide, this luxurious airliner was a technological marvel in 1935. Capable of cruising at 20,000 feet, the airplane experienced fewer weather delays and could fly above adverse conditions. It was also the first airliner to require a flight engineer and accommodated 33 passengers.
