Maitreya, known as Metteyya in Pali or Jampa in Wylie script byams pa, is considered a future Buddha destined for this world according to Buddhist eschatology. In certain Buddhist texts such as the Amitabha Sutra and the Lotus Sutra, he is called Ajita. According to traditional Buddhist accounts, Maitreya is a bodhisattva who will emerge on Earth in the future, attain complete enlightenment, and teach pure dharma. According to scriptures, Maitreya will succeed Gautama Buddha, also known as Śākyamuni Buddha. The prophecy of Maitreya's arrival refers to a time when dharma will be forgotten by most people on Earth. This prophecy is found in canonical literature across major schools of Buddhism including Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana.
