Amitabha's compassionate emissary is Avalokiteshvara, a bodhisattva renowned for embodying the boundless compassion of all Buddhas. This revered figure is often depicted and described in various cultures as either male or female, with diverse portrayals across different lands. In Chinese Buddhism, Avalokiteshvara has evolved into the distinct female figure Guanyin, while in Cambodia he appears as Lokesvara.
