In Mahayana Buddhism, a bodhisattva is the Sanskrit term for anyone who has generated bodhicitta, which is a spontaneous wish to attain buddhahood motivated by great compassion and a desire to benefit all sentient beings. Bodhisattvas are highly revered subjects in Buddhist art, often depicted as wise and enlightened figures.
