Bodhidharma was a devout Buddhist monk who lived during the 5th/6th century CE. Traditionally credited as the one who introduced Ch'an (Dhyana, Japanese: Zen) to China, he's also recognized as its first Chinese Patriarch. Legend has it that Bodhidharma started the rigorous physical training of the Shaolin Monks that eventually led to the creation of Shaolinquan. Bodhidharma, also known as P'u-ti ta-mo and Da-mo, was an Indian meditation master who traveled to China around 520 CE. He's revered as the first Chinese patriarch of Chan (Zen). Born in 470, he lived until 543.
