The Gardens, directly behind the Pitti Palace, sit majestically as the main seat of the Medici grand dukes of Tuscany at Florence. These gardens are among the first and most recognizable formal 16th-century Italian gardens to have taken shape. The mid-16th-century garden style developed here features longer axial pathways, broad gravel avenues, an abundance of stone structures, extravagant use of statues and fountains, and intricate details scattered throughout semi-private and public spaces that were infused with classical influences: grottos, nympheums, garden temples, and other architectural wonders. The gardens' openness, offering a vast view of the city, stood in stark contrast to the conventional norms of its time. With grandeur unmatched, these gardens flourished despite being inaccessible to anyone beyond the immediate Medici family circle, and entertainment or festivities were never permitted within their gates.
