c. 18th Century Smallsword Oakeshott Collection Catalogue Number:OC 028 A Norman-style silver boat hilt, mounted on a Solingen blade with type 113 guard, is showcased in the Oakeshott Collection. This boat hilt style was one of the later forms of the smallsword and served both military and civilian purposes, often boasting decorations that hinted at the owner's occupation. The slender, hexagonal cross-sectioned Solingen blade features a deep fuller marked "GIO PIETRO CLAUBERG" on one side and "DI SOLINGA ME FECIT" on the other. The Clauberg family appears to have been a significant producer in Solingen from at least the early 17th C, with Abraham Claubergh marking blades of his manufacture as far back as then.
