The imposing boar carving now proudly displayed at the Bowes Museum has a rich history, having originally adorned the facade of a building in Newgate that was torn down before its stones were relocated to the museum's premises. Evidence suggests that this intricate stone carving holds a connection to Richard III, who held sway over Barnard Castle during the 1570s, prior to his ascension to the throne. Interestingly, another boar carving can be found at the castle and St Mary's church, both of which are situated in Newgate.
