The Human Genome Project was a landmark research effort that aimed to map every gene in the human body. Launched in 1990 and completed in 2003, it was an international collaboration involving scientists from more than 20 countries. Led by Dr. Francis Collins, the project's goal was to identify all of the estimated 30,000 to 100,000 genes in the human genome and determine their functions. The project used a combination of computational and laboratory techniques to sequence the DNA of several individuals. The completed map revealed that humans have approximately 3 billion base pairs of DNA, with more than 99% of it identical across all individuals. The remaining 1% consists of variations that contribute to genetic diversity. While the Human Genome Project has led to numerous advances in genetics and medicine, critics argue that its focus on sequencing human genes may have overlooked other important areas of genomic research.
