The mysterious stone carvings in Caldragh Cemetery on Boa Island, Lower Lough Erne are a subject of great fascination. Placed side by side on unrelated pillars, these enigmatic figures have been the centerpiece of this ancient graveyard since time immemorial. The Boa figure, an indigenous bilateral sculpture, was once the sole occupant of this sacred space. However, in 1939, the Lustymore Idol was brought to Caldragh Cemetery from its original resting place on Lustymore Island, located just south of Boa Island in Lower Lough Erne. Now, it stands proudly with its back turned towards the Boa figure, as if defying its presence. Despite numerous attempts to unravel their secrets, the true intentions behind creating these stone sculptures remain shrouded in mystery. Were they part of pre-Christian religious sites or were early Christians who incorporated older pagan beliefs into their grave sites responsible for their creation? The answers, much like the carvings themselves, continue to elude us. Boa Island, a place steeped in history and intrigue, is home to these captivating stone sculptures. And as we continue to explore its secrets, one thing becomes clear: the allure of these ancient carvings will continue to captivate us for generations to come.
