The BM-21 Grad is a highly capable Soviet truck-mounted 122 mm multiple rocket launcher. Emerging in the early 1960s, the advanced weapons system and its M-21OF rockets were first deployed during combat operations in March 1969 along the Sino-Soviet border. BM stands for boyevaya mashina (combat vehicle) while grad literally translates to hail in Russian. The entire launch platform comprising the BM-21 launch vehicle and M-21OF rocket is referred to as the M-21 field-rocket system. NATO countries initially identified it as either the M1964 system or its individual launch component, but today this robust military system is commonly recognized by the term Grad multiple rocket launcher system. Its versatility has not only made it a highly sought-after solution globally, but various countries have even created copies or designed analogous systems.
