Bluenose Sailing Model
thingiverse
Recreation of the famous Canadian Bluenose sailing ship, but as a single-master. The triangular sail does allow it to sail on a roughly beam reach, but it's a bit tricky to get the sail just right, a touch of rudder offset helps as well. Included are cut-out plans for the sail patterns, I used acetate paper. Print the keel heavier than the upper hull for balance! Hull is pegged together with 3/16" steel rod acquired from my local Canadian Tire (generic hardware megastore).
Update: How to Sail It
- The rudder is long, so it is sensitive to small adjustments. - To sail downwind with the square sail -- Ensure the sails are perpendicular to the boat's keel -- Ensure the rudder is straight. -- The boat will correct & sail downwind even if deployed facing another direction. -- May capsize in cross-breeze/freak wave - To sail on a beam reach with the square sail -- Adjust the sails to be rotated 5deg tilted toward the Leeward side -- Adjust the rudder to be cantered 1-3deg. toward the Windward side. - To sail downwind with the triangular sail -- Adjust the sail to be perpendicular to the keel. -- Adjust the rudder to be 1-3deg towards the same side as the sail. - To sail on a beam reach with the triangular sail -- Adjust the sail to be perpendicular to the keel -- Adjust the rudder to 2-4deg to the windward side. -- Vessel will self-guide - To sail upwind with the triangular sail -- Adjust the sail 10deg closer to the hull than perpendicular -- Adjust the rudder to 5deg to the windward. -- Soft winds only, will capsize in strong winds.
