Blossoming Lamp
thingiverse
3D printing offers the unique ability to create items that couldn't be made otherwise, such as captured joints where moving parts are printed together without assembly. One example is a 14-piece lampshade that opens like a blossom when pulled from the top for increased light output. This lamp design was entered into ProtoParadigm's Winter Wonderland Contest as a symbol of hope during long, dark winters. It was inspired by a more complex model but simplified to work with non-powder printers. The lampshade and stand can be printed in PLA at 120 mm/s using Sailfish firmware on an unheated blue painters tape. To assemble, remove the lampshade from the platform carefully, exercise it, and cut remaining strings. The stand accommodates a standard threaded lamp rod with a candelabra socket and LED bulb. The bottom of the stand is solid for added stability and features airflow holes for cooling. The designer chose to sign his name on the bottom of the stand, inspired by his potter father's practice.
