Bloodhound Steering Wheel

The BLOODHOUND SSC project is a remarkable engineering challenge that demands robust steering wheel design for managing extreme conditions. The steering wheel, an essential control input, must be manufactured efficiently and cost-effectively. Drawing inspiration from modern race cars, my design features a closed wheel with flat top and bottom to save space while ensuring safe grip points. A tri-spoke structure offers rigidity, and standard six-hole attachment patterns support off-the-shelf quick release systems. Buttons for air brakes, chute releases, and thrust increase are ergonomically placed near the driver's thumbs and index finger to avoid compromising grip. Aluminum is chosen as the material of choice due to its manufacturability on a 3-axis CNC mill and weight considerations. Composites were deemed too complex for this part, requiring more time and resources. Grips are machined slightly oversized, coated with rubber for vibration reduction and enhanced grip. Speed holes in the backside reduce mass and weight to approximately one to two pounds. Ergonomic side grips and finger indentations ensure driver comfort and control. An LCD display or 'rev' lights were omitted due to potential design complications and readability issues during operation. Your feedback is appreciated, Kevin.
