These imposing stone sentinels were constructed across the Eastern Cape of South Africa during the 1800s when British authorities endeavored to subdue the untamed frontiers of this African nation - built at regular intervals between main forts and British settlements, these stone edifices served as a safeguard for British soldiers. Crafted from sturdy stone, they were designed in a robust, more compact style, similar to larger fortresses. The letter "D" on each roof must align directly above the entrance door, allowing the roof to align perfectly with supporting pillars - no additional supports are required, only a carefully constructed overhang.
