The Blade of Woe initially emerged as a singular Ebony Dagger during the events unfolding in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Lucien Lachance revealed that this dagger had never been used previously. He presented it to the Hero of Kvatch as a gift from the Dark Brotherhood, and subsequently, the Night Mother placed an enchantment on it.
