Black Widow Spider
thingiverse
This hand-sized spider makes a perfect prank prop for scaring friends! It prints out rapidly - 2 hours for the body and just 30 minutes for each set of legs. To assemble this spooky arachnid, follow these steps: The test sample was printed in ABS plastic, but I'm confident that PLA will work just as well. To start, print the spider's body with supports in place. Keep the fill density low at around 10% and every 2 layers - you may need to remove excess support material from under the belly. For a smoother finish on the bottom, it might be helpful to use a 4-layer raft for printing the body. Next, print the legs on a separate object using a 2-layer raft with supports. When removing each leg from the print bed, carefully keep track of their numbers - you'll need this info later when assembling the spider. To make assembly easier, only remove parts of the raft and support material that break away easily; leave some on to give the legs a natural appearance. Use the numbered picture guide provided in the file to mark the location of each leg as it's removed from the bed. Painting Instructions: Use red paint to color the hourglass shape and eyes, and don't be afraid to apply multiple coats until you achieve the desired effect - I used a marker for mine, but you may prefer to use traditional brushes. Leg Assembly Instructions: When looking at the spider's body from directly above with the head pointing up, attach each leg one by one in alternating patterns - imagine placing the numbers on a clock face! Apply a strong adhesive, and then set the legs in place before moving on to the next step. You may need to prop the belly of the spider against something about 1/2 inch high until the glue sets. Antenna Assembly Instructions: These small extensions will fit neatly into either available slot on the head - they might need a little extra support, but just be patient until they're dry and set.
